The topic on "whats in your pack" got me to thinking. How far do you get off the roads where you hunt. I never get farther than a mile or so elk hunting around here but deer hunting I can get a couple of miles away from any roads. I also hunt deer and bear in a road closed unit and can walk miles on old roads. The years that I dont go out of state to hunt, I do at least one wilderness hunt and hike in seven to ten miles to set up camp and then do day hikes/hunts from there. I think I found someone to go with me on next years hunt in the buckhorn wilderness for three days. It's harder then youd think to find anybody to go along with me on these type of hunts.

If I'm near home, I go about 5 or so miles in away from roads. But, I know my area cause I grew up out here. (I go in the WMA)
In the "city", I'm no more than a mile in without seeing roads. Probably not even that much. We have ATV trails there, so, I'm uaually always near a road of some type.

When I had two good knees, I would walk in about 2-3 miles. I would leave the human tracks behind at about 1 1/2-2 miles so I knew I was in the right spot.
Now with two bad knees I walk in about 3/4 of a mile. I just go in from a different direction so I am almost in the same spot.

From the paved/gravel(back roads) roads, I seldom got more than a few miles, often I have hunted or trapped in sight of the road. But there were times that I would park, particularly when predator calling, and hike several miles.
