I finally settled down and worked for the state, on the highway, for over 23 years. Then, an accident a couple of years ago left me disability retired....So for a liveing I am now a "drain on the system".... So you young folks work hard, work long, and pay lots of taxes....I need a raise on my Social Security.

I'm gainfully retired, and have been for about five years. Between U.S. Social Security, Canadian pension, Quebec pension and several smaller RRSPs I've got my paws into a lot of pockets. I'm not wealthy, but I did plan ahead and am certainly glad now. I think the key to how well you'll retire is having your house and automobiles paid off, and getting the kids out on their own. Now if I'm able to hang around until I grow moss up one side I'll be quite content. Best wishes.

loader. Are you a plumber or pipefitter? I worked as a fitter for a couple of years and kind of prefer it over plumbing but went back to the plumbing, there is more plumbing work in this local.

Hands:

The guy who offered you the $50 did so because you were able to do something that he couldn't do -and didn't know how to do. Why shouldn't you be paid for your expertise? To you, it's ridiculously easy -because you're an expert in what you do. Why shouldn't you be paid for that expertise? You pay a doctor, don't you? It's not a question of how much time it took you. It's a question of paying you for your knowledge. It's not the same thing.

I know, and you're right. Just, most of my "customers" are elderly, and they can't do it not really cause they don't know how...just, they physically can't. And, I don't wanna rip em off. And, I know em...so, I feel obliged to be "neighborly". Can't quite help it. sad.gif
The only thing I accept a good amount of bucks for is when I'm hired out to do laborous jobs like clearing land or working fields....or cutting/hauling/chopping/& stacking firewood....or stuff like that. (But, I take in account how they are always neighborly and offer me a cold drink and a sandwich or something..lol) tongue.gif
I don't mind doin "bit" jobs, cause there's always a money job waiting on me.

I agree with you....but, on the condition that the person offering can actually afford it. Most of my folks can't.

I'm retired and I get an electronic transfer of my first Social Security check the third Wednesday of this October. I'm glad to see that so many of you are contributing to insure, I can continue to receive my Social Security transfers.

Okay, okay, okay.... I'll reply:

In my first life, I was in the U.S. Coast Guard where I served as a Yeoman First Class (E-6) and handled military personnel records, payroll, computers, and everything else you can think of.

I took the "early out" in 1996 that Congress approved back then, when they offered a new 15 yr retirement plan to all the branches of the military. I had 17 years in and no matter what, I just couldn't make Chief (E-7) because the USCG was so "top heavy". So I considered the early retirement deal, talked it over with family, and submitted my request. Later on, I heard that they had to shut it down in 1998 due to so many people jumping ship. I heard that that Army alone, lost 37,000 personnel in the summer of 1997!!! ohmy.gif

Anyway, since I retired in 1996, I settled in Virginia. My wife, daughters, and I could have gone anywhere we wanted to for employment. I ended up landing a job with a mortgage banking company until they got downsized/bought out/hostile take over/etc... Man, it was a rude awakening to the civilian world! You go from the security and stability of military life to a civilian job where someone else wants your job and gets it!

Soon after, I landed a much better job, more secure and stable, with a nice manufacturing company called Super Radiator Coils. No, no, no, we DON'T make automobile radiators. We make the huge industrial heating/cooling coil units for buildings, dry cleaners, and supermarket dairy display cases. I am like model99er in a way... I am a one man I.T. department, where I do the database programming, the Unix server administration, and the main PC network administration. Not only that, but I oversee the servers in our other corporate plant offices in Phoenix, AZ and Minneapolis, MN. I love my job, but it gets real stressful when I get pulled in 18 different directions at once, because everyone needs things NOW and on different operating systems! ohmy.gif mad.gif

Now you know why I am the way I am! laugh.gif

Ok here it goes!
I work for a little company called Weld Racing Wheels. I have been here going on 10yrs now. Started out by being a machinst for 7 yrs now I am a lousy sales guy.
I cover the west half of the country trying to sell aftermarket billit Harley and custom wheels. It is a pretty good job I get to travel to all of the big bike rally's and get paid to do it.
LOL biggrin.gif
Sodak Jim
I'm a retired electrical and mechanical engineer from Honeywell International. I spent most of the last 26 years designing and building automated manufacturing systems for the production of electronic materials. I did four years in the Navy as a electronics tech . I was a TV repairman, certified aircraft mechanic, typographic machinist, avionics tech, exploration diamond driller, and insurance agent all before age 30.

I was aboard The USS Ticonderoga CVA-14 during the Tonkin Gulf incident, and did two 8 month tours during the Viet Nam thing.

I took early retirement at age 56 to have enough time left to enjoy it. Although I enjoyed working, I think the reduced stress of retirement will greatly increase my longevity.
Mongojoe
jason3... I enjoy the bike rallys myself. My wife and I usually make 3 to 5 each year in this area, and set up a small booth and sell a few odds and ends there... Altho the largest we go to is generally not more than 5 or 6 thousand people, and are not really rallys so much as they are swap-meets...or, I guess, in truth they started out as swap-meets, but over time have pretty much degenerated to being just weekend biker parties... But, they are fun...LOL

I install carpet, vinyl and laminate flooring. I always wanted to get me a personalized liscense plate for my truck that says "ILAYRUG" but for some weird reason my fiance hates that idea. Any way thats what I do for a livin.
