Well, with Deer season over for most of us, I was wondering who is planning to do any "Wintertime" hunting; be that small game or predator hunting ... so what ya'll planning to hunt now / next ??

I'll start it off ...
Tomorrow I'm planning to deliver a country ham to a Farming Family that live about 30 miles away west from where I live. I'm planning to do some serious Coyote there after the 1st of the year (our county has a $75 Coyote Bounty that takes affect Jan. 1st). Between now and then I'm planning to do some scouting as well as get my Airedale out for some Rabbit and Squirrel hunting.

I might still deer hunt (open 'till Jan 7th - here in VA east of the Blue Ridge), but I don't normally like to, with the whole area overrun with hound dogs chasing after deer. dry.gif

I could hunt west of here with my compound bow if I wanted to, but normally, I'll focus on small game, rabbits, and maybe if I get a wild hair, I might go after some Canadian Geese.

I just finished loading another 100 rounds for the 22-250, I'll be calling yotes in the AM. Cougar is still open until March and one of these days I'll call one in. I looked outside a few minutes ago and the sky is clear so as long as theres no fog on the morning the weather should be perfect.(clear and cold).

Our son and son in law were talking about doing some predator calling this weekend... But I see the temperature is running about 6 degrees and there is a bit of a wind, so I'll bet they woose out this morning... If it warms up tomorro afternoon, I'm thinking about going to a turkey shoot, if that counts.

We have enough snow on the ground now to make rabbit hunting (actually hares) interesting. They can't hide their tracks in the snow, nor have they completely changed their color to white yet so they really stand out like a sore thumb and will for about one more month. After that it's too damn cold to hunt much of anything this far north. Best wishes.

For the past 3 years I belonged to a small (800 acres - 8 members) hunting club 8 miles from where I live in Virginia. Only about 4 of the members hunted deer with a rifle (permitted in this county). The rest hunted turkey. I was the only one who hunted with a bow and muzzleloader, so I had the place to myself before the general firearms season opened. The club did not use or permit dogs, but all the surrounding clubs did and, dogs being dogs they were all over the place. I have killed a number of deer there.

Last year, the owner began developing part of it, so we had traffic across the property, road construction and the gate was always left unlocked. I did not rejoin this year, and have no place to hunt in Virginia at the moment.

I am from Maine, however and hunt there every fall, at a place called King and Bartlett Fish and Game Club, in the western mountain area. There are 36000 acres behind a gate, with a maximum of 16 hunters at a time. Last month I shot a 203 pound 10 pointer. It was only the 4th largest deer taken this year. There are a lot of big deer in that part of Maine, but there is also a lot of country. Because of this, the success rate is not high, but the opportunity to take a big deer is there.

Colonel, that is a mammoth deer! Biggest my clan got this year..he managed to get a 12 pointer, but, it only weighed 170 lbs. (And, that's pretty big here laugh.gif ) Congrats to you!

I'm still on deer. There are tons of does...but, this year I'm just going after bucks. and so far, nope. laugh.gif Have seen a few though, but nothing giving a shot at.

like wild boar I too would absolutely love it if we had a $75.00 bounty on coyote pelts here in idaho. Every time I had a job fall through and had a day off I would get all excited like a kid on x-mas, grab my 243wssm and my calls and off i would go to make $ the funnest way possible. I WISH! But yeah I will still be hunting coyotes through the winter also even if it costs me $.

Trying to do 3 things at one time now. Setting Cable Restraints for fox and coyotes, hunting coyotes and fox, and hunting deer with a flintlock.

Happy New Year To All.

Happy New Year to all................. Uncle Buck, I have never tried the cable restraints. They aren't legal here. Are they about like snares?
Uncle Buck
Mongojo this is the first year they will be legal in PA. We can only harvest coyotes and fox. Anything else has to be released which means SKUNK too. It looks and works just like a snare but does not kill. Suppose to be easy to remove nontargeted animals without hurting them. Hopefully if things work out they will allow us to use them for other furbearing animals down the road.
Mongojoe
Ahhhh OK .... Sounds like snares with what we used to call "relaxing locks". These would loosen, or "relax" when the animal wasn't pulling aginst them, and would not "lock up" like most snares. They were used to allow animals to be released, or for areas where dogs are a problem.

could someone post a pic of a snare that is leagl in pa. thanks loader
