Full Version: Who duck hunts?

I don't, but I've always wanted to. I don't know anyone that does or wants to, so...and I've never went and did it on my own. Plus, I kinda want a dog to go with, I think it'd just be the icing on the cake of f-u-n.

But, I have a question. I've noticed here and there where people would (say they) have shot ducks on the water. I didn't know you could do that (?) cause I'd always been told the contrary.

But, I don't know much about duck hunting (well....nothing at all cept aim and fire laugh.gif )
so, I am probably wrong.

Anyone know though? And if it's wrong, is it a legal wrong? (I don't much want to get into people's ethics...lol..cause everyone's is different kinda. But, if it IS wrong, and not a legal wrong, is it an ethics wrong (subject to individual's ethics)?

(I'd still like to go and hunt ducks. I don't like to eat ducks, but, I'd choke down one per specie I was allowed...cause I really only want 1 per allowance for "decorating". they sure are pretty on a wall. huh.gif dry.gif )<---lol..which is probably wrong to some. But, I'd at least try and choke them down!

When I was younger we used to "jump-hunt" ducks on the ponds up on the flat lands... We'd drive the roads till we saw a pond with ducks, then we'd park out of site, and put a sneak on the pond... When we all got up behind the dike we'd "jump up and start shooting"... But I have not hunted ducks in probably 25 years... Have not shot one in probably 10. But I'd always give mine to someone else... I just never much cared for the taste of duck.
Hands
I don't like the taste either. I don't so much know if it's the taste or the texture. I'd have to toss them in a soup or something. biggrin.gif

I tried my hand at duck/goose hunting a few years ago when I got started in hunting. Goose is actually very good and tastes like a Thanksgiving turkey - the only difference is the meat is real dark.

Ducks such as Mallards, Canvasbacks, and Teal, are the good eating duck species. The diver ducks (sea ducks, mergansers, etc...) are horrible and the most disgusting type of duck to even think of trying to eat.

I gave up waterfowling around here, because of all the ridiculous waterfowl laws and fees within VA, and worse yet - GREED among duck hunters. (sorry)

Well, I have had old timers tell me that ducks were best to eat when they were headed down south for the winter, cause they had been up north feeding on grain... They were not much good to eat when they were headed back north for the summer, cause they had been down south feeding on fish... Now that is what I was told for many years...but... I just never cared for them no matter what season they were taken in.... But we did used to "trap" alot of them on the mud flats when the lake water was down...but like I said, I gave most of them to someone else.
Hands
I have had heard goose was pretty good. I have never had it (well, I have had, like, tame goose laugh.gif , but, I imagine wild goose would be much better.)
I don't even know what kind of duck I have had. Probably was a "grody" kind.

Awesome! What's your opinion on the "shooting landed ducks" thing..I'm kinda interested. I find it varies a lot with duck hunters. Lot say it's wrong, some say it is okay. What is your stance?

Oh and while I got ya..lol....what's your fave duck to eat? I had duck before, don't know what kind it was...and I didn't like it much (chinese place, so..who really knows!) . I really think duck hunting would be my all time fave...but, I dont want to ever bother if I don't want to eat them. But always open to try (and focus on a certain specie for taste)

pigger is big time into duck hunting. The ducks that taste pretty good around here are wood ducks.they eat acorns and such, don't have that fishy taste.

Yes I'm a waterfowler. I even took a trip to ND the other year to waterfowl. It is legal to shoot ducks on the water. However, some say it's not ethical. Me? I say if you can get ducks or geese to land in your decoy spread you've done everything perfect and it's fine to wack'em on the water or standing in the decoys in a field.

I'd much rather eat duck than goose. I usually just breast the birds out and freeze them. Then after I have 30-40 pounds I take it to a butcher shop and have meat sticks or bologna made out of it. They are delicious!

I've found that the best eating ducks are puddle ducks with wood ducks and teal being the best. The diver ducks (ringnecks, bluebills, canvasbacks, redheads, etc..) are not that good. Duck kabobs are very good. I've also had duck poppers and duck fajitas. Both were excellent. A buddy of mine from TX turned me on to bluebill chili. It was delicious but he made it so hot I could hardly eat it. He thought it could have been hotter? Dang Texicans!

Yep, your whole family are waterfowl jinxes!!!!! Not sure about Da Bleat.

If you were ever on one of those hunts when we crushed the birds you would be hooked. Nothing like 200 canada geese trying to land on top of you at one time! It's quite the rush!

Speaking of that. You local guys let me know if and where you see alot of geese in a field. I'll go get'em!!!!
hemmy
heard a bunch of honking up on main street. dry.gif
Pigger
Honkys?
