This subject was brought up a couple of years ago, but I thought I'd resurect it to give some of the new people a chance to offer their views.....

But, whatever happened to the art of stalking? Does anyone still do it? Seems that everyone stand hunts any more... When I was younger it was common here for a fella to park his truck, get out, and slowly, quitely, and carefully "stalk" thru a patch of woods, brushy creek bottom, or timbered hillside that he was pretty sure held deer, watching for the flick of an ear or tail, the shine of an antler tip, the patch of brown thru the trees and brush... Armed with a quick handleing, iron-sighted lever gun in .30-30. .35 Remington, or one of a host of "older cartridges", he was ready for any deer he encountered... Has stalking really become a lost art?

Mongo, that is still a great way to hunt, in my opinion. cool.gif

When I'm bowhunting, I'll use my treestand and keep as quiet and still as possible. But when I'm rifle hunting with 99er and Bawana at the VA camp, I think it's best to slowly hike around with my old Marlin .30-30 (and now the new Savage .308) and keep the deer moving around. It would be awesome to bump a giant 8 pointer to 99er and have him drop it in its tracks, and then watch as 99er has to drag his own deer off the mountain! ha ha ha ha ha ha....... laugh.gif biggrin.gif

Marlin 30AS .30-30 ---- plain open sights, historical, traditional, and "old school". It'll still be used at the VA camp for brush busting and close in work in the thick stuff.

Savage 110 .308 w/scope ---- Will get christened this season at the VA camp and will be used mostly on ridgetops and/or clearings, or places where I'm not going to use the .30-30. It should definitely reach out and drop a deer way farther than the .30-30 will.

Two rifles, two styles of hunting. The best of both worlds.... Gotta love it... biggrin.gif

Now thats a tuffy.......LOL, I usually stand hunt, but, I still do some stalking. Depends on the situation what im going to do.One of the best ways around here is to stalk the corn fields on windy or rainy days.I've gotten a few deer this way,...but i normally stand hunt. dry.gif

Nobody stand hunts out here. I've never even been in a stand. I still hunt timber or spot and stalk in the more open mountains.

I do some still hunting. The first few days of our firearm season I wil stay in my blind or treestand. after that I still hunt.

Up here we are starting to see an increased interest in tracking deer ie Benoit style. I guess it follows the great restrictions on baiting we have been given by our DNR. I don't have a problem with baiting, but I don't do it.
