Does anyone use any "unusual" methods for hunting game... like hunting squirrels with a bow, rabbits with a slingshot, quail with falcons, deer with atlatls, wilderbeest with ballbats, ducks with rocks, or anything with blowguns or spears ? ..... Let's hear some stories.
One winter I was moving the "MOWING AHEAD" signs on the highway for the guys mowing the rights-of-way... I had just pulled off the road and got out of my truck to move a sign, when a bunny jumps up and runs off about 15 yards or so... Just fooling around, I picked up a little bigger than golfball sized rock and chucked it at him... It smacked him up-side the head and he fell over and went to kicking... It was freezing out, so I cleaned him right fast, stuck him in a handy bag, laid it in the back of my truck to freeze, and took him home when I got off work............................ Then one fall evening, I was coming in to the shop to get off work. It was late, and I had my dump truck moving at a pretty good clip, when that big gobbler flew out of the brush along side the road and smacked the side of my truck... His head and neck were pretty messed up, but other than that he was in good shape... Turkey season was going on, and that gobbler went home with me... I remember asking people if they got a turkey that season...and telling them I bagged my gobbler that year with a yellow, 5-yard, state dump truck.
You got any stories ?

LoL...cool stories!! I don;'t use any unusual methods. I;ve brought home deer bagged with a Jeep Wrangler and a turkey bagged with a rear view mirrir of a Thunderbird...but, nothing "traditionally unusual".

I shot a dozen doves with one shot from brother's flare pistol. It was modified to shoot 12 gauge shot shells. I called it the "Dirty Larry Pistol" to give credit to my brother Larry and Clint Eastwood. The barrel was only 5 inches and the muzzle blast was tremendous. Pattern was about 6 ft in diameter at 10 yards but it had very little velocity. I would not go through one side of a coffee can. The first time we fired it we nailed it to the side of shed, and got aroud the corner of building, and pulled the trigger with a fishing line. A section of pipe was welded inside the flare guns barrel. I don't think we realized how dangerous and illegal this thing was. Don't try this at Home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I was a kid I would ride on the steps of dad's combine (a John Deere 45 with no cab) and watch for rabbits. The wheat stubble was tall enough it would slow the bunnies down and I could catch them.
Dad used to talk about the days before combines when they shocked wheat and they would put a burlap bag over the entrance to the holes the rabbits made in the bottom of the shock and scare the bunnies into the bag.
Hunting with guns nolonger sounds fun to me!

Coon Clubbing..... 35 years ago
Determine where all the plowed corn fields are in the county. Then go spotlighting. The guy in the truck keeps the light on 'em, while his buddy runs to 'em with a baseball bat. Make that first lick a good one so you don't have to chase it.
A coon can run just as fast as a young man in a plowed corn field.
Our best night was 23 coons.

LMAO ... boy that really jogs my memory bank.
We used to go "Possum Clubbing" back in my misguided youth, whenever we couldn't think of any other trouble to get into. Our "ultimate club" was a sawed-off Golf Club with a Gear Shift Knob screwed on the end ... it had a whole a hole drilled in the handle with a leather strap !!

LOLOLOL.... Yeah, that does bring back some memories of the 60's... good friends now gone, old pickup trucks, dark nights, suicidal runs thru the woods, and old coon dogs.
Thanks for that post Pacecar....and Welcome to the forum.

Snakes with a scythe?
Along about 1959, when I was a kid on a farm in Pennsylvania, we didn't have a cutter bar for the tractor, so hay was a hand job. I got into some sort of a nest of snakes at the creek bank, probably about 8 or 10 of them, but it seemed like hundreds to me at the time. I must have looked like some sort of wild indian doing a war dance and screaming, for my mother and two neighbors showed up pronto. Snakeburger all over the place. I was much hurt that they laughed their heinies off over the whole business.
