I know that Disney's Song of The South was not released in the U. S. A because of a decison by Disney excutives.

In years past I tried to get my hands on this video because of memories of it as a kid and because of the Uncle Remus tales that included predators against prey.

today I attended the Harrisburg Christmas show with my wife. I knew they would have knives, hunting hats, and such. However never knew that I would end up getting Song of The South in DVD. Vendor gets these hard to get video's from the UK. Knowing how hard it was at the time to get my hands on it I purchased it.

Had to watch it this evening of course. Can't wait to allow my grandchild to watch when I feel he is at the appropriate age. It's does have some strong violence that a toodler or maybe and 5 year old should not watch until they get to understand what a bear and or fox eat. For example Brer Bear informs everyone that he was going to knock Brer rabbits head right off with a club. For young viewers this just might be a little to violent until they become of age.

I also have Watership Down. Again not for the young at heart and or the bunny huggers. However for the outdoorsperson it kind of explains that rabbits were put here as food for everyone.

Anyway should you get the chance try to watch Watership Down and or Song of The South. However make sure your youngster are grown a bit before they watch it.

Disney never released it here because of the slavery overtones and such that it has. I did not even pick that up when I watched it. Heard that many are signing a petition and sending it to Disney to see if it Song of The South can be released in these United States. Last I heard it was still a big NO.
As a predator hunter I really enjoy both of these fine movies.

You may find it difficult to ever see "Song of the South" again commercially in the US. And I just now read that it has never been released commercially for home video in the US either... I heard sometime back that Disney had pretty much "shelved" it permanently... due to fear of offending someone with the animal violence and the tar baby (read that "political correctness" run-amuck)... I always enjoyed it when I was a kid...... That was a good find.

Here's an interesting article on "Song of the South"....

And here's the petition, if anyone wants to sign it......

Mongojo thanks for posting the info on Song Of The South and the petetion. I have signed it and I have placed the info on my site should anyone desires to sign it too.

...I signed it myself...and sent it to a few other "old-timers" that remember the movie, in case they wish to sign it.

I never watched the film, but i know all the stories. We have a trades show once a month for several months, and a few years ago I almost bought it myself. There was a guy there who was selling them in dvd format, but, they were what looked like copies. Next to him, was a guy selling bootleg CDs, so I kept trucking. I didn't know they were that hard to come by, I always told myself I'd find a better copy somewhere else. (lol..ebay!! )

But, Watership Down was always a favorite of mine, mostly the book. The cartoon was really sad when I saw it as a kid, but, I get it more now, and wouldn't mind finding it on dvd either.

The petition is down for me., might be my comp, or maybe it'll come back up if it's not.

Thanks for the post! (and the links too, Mongo!)

LOl the vendor I purchased it from was from Georgia. That just might be the same person who was selling them at the Pa show?????????
Georgia is a lot closer to Alabama then it is to Pennsylvania.

LoL..might be. They were probably the "real deal" at mine, like I say, I kept trucking (he had about 100 of them plus a couple other rare titles). The guy next to him in the same table, who he seemed friendly with..lol..he got me last year, briefly. His Cds were only $5 and he kept saying, "yes, they are brand new cds" (cause i kept wondering how he could sell them so cheap, were really popular cds). Sealed, labels, everything. Then, you buy one and open it, and it's a once blank cd with his writing all over it, and you see the labels were just really great photocopies.

He got me for about 30 bucks til I pointed out the cops all over the place and went all smart arse like "we can do this the easy way or the hard way" and got my money back. then, I pretty much told everyone around there they were fakes.

so..lol..I see him every year and avoid him and pretty much whomever he seems to be traveling with.

anyway..........
