Sevendogs,
My Airedale 's (Nana) Mother was from "show" stock and her Father was from "hunting" stock. We didn't get a chance to see the Father (he was out hunting with the man of the house) when we picked up Nana, so I really don't know he was a "smooth version" airedale or not; I sort of doubt it. Very, very sad to say that my wife ran into the breeder's wife about a year ago that we got Nana from and due to different accidents (rat poison in their chicken coop & antifreeze at a neighbors) the breeders only ever had the one litter of pups from that Dam & Sire. My wife did find out that the Sire was from Texas.
I did go searching on the internet to see if I could find some information on the "smoot version", but came up empty. If you happen to have any links or pictures of the "smooth version" that you could post, I would be quite interested in seeing them.
During my internet search, I did stumble accross this ...
http://www.huntingworkingairedales.org/Section_2.pdf... a very interesting read on the Airedales and their Hunting pros & cons.
I was totally impressed with Nana a few years back when she actually retrieved Doves without any training whatsoever on my part. After reading that article I sure wish that I would have taken the time to give her some training and experience on bird hunting when she was younger.
