I have been fascinated by the Weasel and also the Mink to which is a member of the Weasel family or vice versa.
Ounce for ounce probably one of Gods thoughest given creatures.
I remember hunting and seeing weasel just looking at me just inside of the hole of a wood pile. I did not kill them either. Kind of had a respect for them.
However one time I was just taking my 22 for a walk on an old railroad bed. Here comes this cottontail rabbit running right toward me. Right after him was this little weasel. The weasel stopped looked at me then continue to chase the rabbit. That day I saved the rabbits life probably for a short period anyway. I did shoot that weasel but it made me even respect them more. Something how they smell just like a skunk ?
I don't see any weasels now in my particular county of Pa. However I know they are out there. Let see? where would be the best place to find a weasel? Why places that have a lot of rabbits of course?
I talk to many trappers and they tell me that they still get weasel on many of these beagle club grounds. Members of the beagle clubs make sure there are plenty of rabbits around to train their dogs. I wonder who tells the weasels that there are rabbits there because they tell me that they move in real fast?
Trappers tell me if I want to trap them set your weasel box along railraod tracks with a lot of briars around. Agan briars? So it's looks like weasel sure do like them there rabbits because rabbits like briar patches.
Weasel box is nothing more then a box with a hole the size of a door knob cutter on the side and an open bottom. It has to be high enough that when you place a Zero trap inside that it will spring and catch the weasel. The weasel goes through the hole in the box and step on the 0 trap. I made a few weasel boxes some years back and I have them in the gargae. One of these years when I setting leg holds I'm going to put out a few weasel boxes too.
Weasel you have to love the ones with the 4 legs. Now those 2 legged weasels you have to deal with in life I can do without!
