Well I chose Primarly Meat and Trophy as a bonus, but gotta say that unless it's freeze-butt cold, those naps and snoozes in the woods rank pretty high on my list too !! ... lol wink.gif rolleyes.gif

Heck, I'm a sheep...I went along with the rest on my vote... But the fact is, I never did "trophy hunt".... Actually, I have probably taken as many or more does as I have bucks.... They generally make better eating.... But as to actually why I hunt, over all... It's cause I was raised that way... My father hunted about everything around here. I never knew my mother to deer hunt, but she did like squirrel and rabbit hunting..... It, and fishing, were just part of my raiseing.

I put primary meat but some hunts are for the trophy and I give the meat away. I dont ever waste the meat, I allways find someone that will use it.

I hunt primarily for the meat but really appreciate the opportunity to get away from the maddening crowd we encounter in the workaday world. The solitude and silence are worth their weight in gold. All the tension and anger just seem to disappear when we get close to nature. The overall experience is indeed wonderful. Best wishes.

Hands:

Being retired as a hunter, I'll try to answer as I felt at different stages of my life. When I was a teenager, I wanted a buck deer (the only kind allowed then in NY) as a trophy. When does became legal, I wanted a young doe because I now understood more about eating deer meat.(I don't say "venison". So sue me) Does this mean I would have passed up a 6 pointer? Of course not -but if the doe showed up first,well..... I came to real bear hunting late in life and was 59 before I shot my first bear. Thereafter I repeatedly passed up easy shots because now I wanted a 400 pounder. (My first was about 250) As it turned out, I never saw a 400 pounder except twice and those are other stories.

I think there may be a third class of hunter. The one who just simply enjoys being out in the woods. Cal wrote something on another thread that I absolutely agreed with. He mentioned how being out in the woods relieved all the tensions of our every day work lives. I spent my life in a very high tension environment and yet every time I was sitting out on bear stand in the Canadian woods, hour after hour, I never thought about my work life. NEVER. That may be the best reason of all to go hunting! (The fishermen always have great expressions. I read one of theirs once: " God does not deduct from the allotted span of man those hours spent in fishing". I plan to complain to Him about discrimination) biggrin.gif

I like to hunt because pooping in the woods makes me one with nature.

Ahh,ok just kiddin.I'm a trophy dude I guess you could say.I enjoy the meat but also like hanging something on the wall. Now,what is a trophy?I'd say it depends on the hunt.

Hi,I'm hemmy and approve of this message.

Wow, this is an old thread....

I guess I am a meat hunter, first and foremost. I have no problems with taking a doe or two to provide venison for my family and others who might be hungry. However, if a beautiful 10 pointer came within range, I wouldn't hesitate for one second! biggrin.gif

But in reality, what are my chances of seeing a monster 10 pointer.... Does are plentiful around Virginia. I mean there is probably a ratio of doe/buck that is like 12:1 or something...
