I have been useing my Savage 11 in 22-250 for Chucks. So far it has been a great year.I have seen more chucks this year then any of the past 10 years.
model99er
Yotecaller,

I really like the 22-250 caliber for Chucks as well, mine is happens to be in a Savage model99 laugh.gif . Boy did I get it for a decent price, compared to what they normally bring and it's an excellent shooter, almost makes it too easy !! ... lol biggrin.gif

Due time constraints and population reductions from prior years, I'm about 10 to 15 behind what I'd normally have by this time of year (presently at 21). Oddly enough, my best farm this year is one where I thought I'd wiped them out as a result of the past 2 years. I guess the "roadside residents" must have supplied a pretty decent stocking for that farm this year !! laugh.gif

Since I sure don't, I'm curious if anyone here knows just how far groundhogs typically migrate ????

Yes Model99er I really like the 22-250 for chucks, but I have a 221 Fireball that I want to get out sometime this year and give it a try.Once I get a good handload for it I will be shooting for less than half the price of the 22-250.

Let me get back to you on that one. There is a professor at Penn State Berks Campus who is doing research on groundhogs mating habits, etc. Pretty interesting stuff. I'll see if I can find out for ya!

I have been hunting the hogs with the Savage f110 tactical in 25-06, and I gave the NEF Sportster in .17 HMR a try. The 25-06 is working well as usual, but I have had 3 crawl offs with the .17!!! I am not impressed. I bought some Remington .22 Mag Ammo with the V-max's, and they shot very well on the range at 100 yds. I'm going to give them a try in the field as soon as I can get a baby sitter for the evening. It's harder to find a babysitter during the summer months than it is finding the groundhogs!! huh.gif

Man I love hunting chuck. We have to go a little farther afield now to get them though. Too many urbanites with their damn hobby farms poisoning them to protect their precious horses that are lucky to be ridden twice a year. Citified yuppies seem to be ruining everything they touch. I mainly use a heavy Hart barreled .222Rem.Mag. on a Sako 461 single shot action. I wrapped it in a McMillan fibergrain stock. Whole rig only runs about 8 1/2lbs. and quite accurate, in the .3's. There's simply nothing I'd rather hunt than woodchuck. Best wishes.

Mike,

Thanks !! Groundhog migration, mating habits, etc. are more important to some of us than the same info. on Deer !! ... lol biggrin.gif laugh.gif

I started out hunting chucks to improve my shooting skills for Deer Season. Now it's a toss up as to which I would rather hunt !! blink.gif laugh.gif

thanks again for trying to track down the info !!

Cal:

Your remark about "too damn many urbanites with their damn hobby farms" is depressingly similar to what we have gone through in NY. I have seen chuck hunting disappear (as I knew it when I could stop at any of innumerable dairy farms) in less than 20 years time -because the farms were sold off to very rich urbanites who wanted a "week end place" - and for whom the sight of a firearm brought on screaming and fainting fits. The Westerners (both in my country and yours) so far don't seem to have the problem of urbanites buying up land and then banning hunting - probably because the West is still so darn big! -Thank God!

Hello Gerald416,

A good bit of western Canada is owned by Europeans, mostly Germans. They buy up chunks here and there and visit it a couple times during their lives, then pass it on to their children when they pass on. For the time being it's pretty easy hunting.
The major problem is within a hundred miles of so of the larger urban centers like Montreal and Toronto. You can drive forever trying to find a decent spot to hunt chucks. Best wishes.

When I was a boy and even as a young man (I'm 74) the 22-250 was a wildcat. (22-250 Lovell) My chuck rifle at the time was a 220 Swift, using factory loads that pushed a 48gr. bullet out the muzzle at 4140 fps. The Lovell, as I recall moved a 50 gr. bullet out a little bit slower, maybe 3700 fps - and saved enormously on barrel wear as I heard from local gunsmiths. (I replaced a barrel on my Mod.70 after about 1400 rounds, 26" barrel) The Lovell also didn't sound quite so bad on the eardrums or maybe that was just my imagination. (We had no ear muffs in those days because until the advent of the jets and mechs wearing them, they just weren't available)

BTW, for very sentimental family reasons I am really glad that I have encountered another Savage 99 fanatic. biggrin.gif (my father was one of the pioneer engineers on the building of the Panama Canal and spent nearly 6 years there from 1904 to 1910. He went down with a Savage 99 in 30-30, octagonal barrel, curved butt plate, buckhorn sights and all. (I shot my first deer with a rifle using it in 1948 (previously I was shooting rifled slugs) when it was now some 45 years old) My father acted as if there was no other rifle worth considering. I confess that I never saw a smoother operating lever action -with the possible exception of a Win.88 in 308 Win. that I owned once.

Gerald,

I understand about the lack of ear muffs all too well. One summer when I was a young buck, I worked Saturdays running a Chipper in a sawmill, the folks the run the place never provided ear muffs or plugs and I never asked for any either. Well, one Saturday night I decided to go to the local dirt track to watch the races. About 1/2 way thru the races, my hearing went totally dead for about an hour and then very slowly started coming back. I only went back to the sawmill one more time and that was to pick up my last paycheck !! ohmy.gif

As far as model99's, I have 5 and looking hard to add #6. Of course one should only tell the wife that they just have 2 guns ... the one they have and the one their fixin to buy !! ... lol laugh.gif

My 300 and 243 model99's are in "retirement", I have a 22-250 and two 308's that I currently use and am looking for a reasonably priced 2nd 243 to use as a "truck gun". To help keep the costs down, I'v mainly limited my search to Virginia. In fact I will be attending yet another gun show close by next weekend. The beauty of the location of this gun show is that the Airedale and I can get in an early morning and mid-day groundhog hunt in on the way there and back !! rolleyes.gif biggrin.gif

I've shot a few ground hogs as I saw them, mainly to chunk out for coyote bait, but have not actively hunted them. There really were not that many around here... You see alot more now than you used to here, but I was probably in my mid 20's before I ever saw one around here at all that I can recall....But then I did not see a beaver around here till in my early teens, and now they are thick.

99er:

I know it's a little off topic but ever since I've been reading your posts I have wondered about something. When I was a kid, the Savage 99 in 250/3000 had a superb reputation. (Of course, "bullet placement" always was the name of the game but I saw a number of dead deer shot with that 100gr. bullet! Any reason why you don't mention the caliber? I'm asking seriously because perhaps it had some real flaw? (I never owned one and never even shot one)

Gerald,

I don't have anything against the 250-3000 nor the 284 for that matter, except available "off the shelf" bullet selection, as I don't don't do any reloading. Now if I ever happen to hit the lotto and had plenty of time and money available, I'd track me down a 22 High-Power, 250-3000, and 284 Model99's !! wink.gif
